Since the hospital was started by Danny Thomas, it has been offering hope and research to fight the many forms of cancer in children. The hospital offers free care and turns no child away. The hospital is run by Dannys daughter Marlo Thomas.

I have personal experience rescuing two Boxers that were being mistreated. My male Boxer Tucker was found as a puppy at a flea market living in filth with cigarette burns on the top of his head. My female Boxer Daisy, unfortunately passed away in 2010. Daisy was kept in a cage in a garage for the majority of the first eight months of her life. Both Daisy and Tucker turned out to be wonderful dogs and companions and fortunately suffered no long term effects from their mistreatment as puppies.

Animal Friends' Mission Statement-To ensure the well being of companion animals, while ending overpopulation, abuse and unwarranted euthanasia.
|
|
I am choosing Animal Friends because I believe that animals deserve to be treated with love, respect and dignity. I have seen so many animals that are neglected, abused or euthanized (via news media) that it makes me sick. I feel that Animal Friends is a leading shelter because they are a no-kill facility, have no cost spay and neuter programs (for low income families) to prohibit overpopulation and unwanted animals, and make sure that the animals that are there find loving long term homes. They are trying to end animal euthanasia and I feel that is the most admirable goal in the treatment of animals today.

I have worked with many of the local animal rescue groups and shelters over the past 20 years and I respect all of them for the important work that they do. After careful considerate I selected the Animal Rescue League (ARL) as my Wolfe LLC employee charity for two reasons, first it is one of the few "open door" shelters in Western Pennsylvania and second, because Dr. Donna Hughes, ARL's Director Medicine, has a personal comment to animal welfare that I respect very much.

As a veteran myself, I know the sacrifices given by our men and women in our military, along with their families. Danny Christiana, a Slippery Rock University business major, was paralyzed by a dirt bike accident in his backyard March 21, 2009, while showing his parents his latest moves. Taken to a Pittsburgh hospital, doctors told the family he would never be able to breathe on his own or move any of his extremities. But they were wrong. Thanks to a stem cell procedure he received outside the U.S., willpower, and a University that embraces students regardless of their challenges, Christiana is doing better than expected during his third semester at SRU. The SRU chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity launched a "Do It For Danny" campaign. The group accepted contributions to help with medical expenses.

The Mario Lemieux Foundation was created in 1993 by hockey legend Mario Lemieux. In that year, Mario was enjoying the greatest season of his brilliant career and on pace to establish a new NHL scoring record. Then he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's diseas. After a successful battle with Hodgkin's, Mario is now 17 years cancer free and his experience led him to focus on ways to assist those not so fortunate. He devotes much of his time to the Foundation raising funds to help reach the ultimage goal: a cure for cancer.

Having to forfit Mario's roster spot to cancer was a devistating day to the Penguin organization and hockey fans alike. Even in the face of Hodgkin's, he put great effort into building up his organization and even now continues to grow new and fulfilling charity organizations. Mario's days of late 3rd period goals from his knees may be over, but he continues to be a true hero in my eyes and the eyes of many others.

It was a hard choice because there are so many great charities to choose from. For me, it was between St. Judes and Make A Wish. The reason I am choosing St. Judes is so that maybe one day there will be cures for illnesses and Make A Wish will not be needed because the children who are very ill will survive due to new medications.

I have had 3 close friends diagnosed with this disease. All of them in their mid twenties. In fact, in the United States today, there are approximately 400,000 people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Close to 200 new cases are diagnosed each week. This disease is not contagious or directly inherited and at this time cannot be prevented and has no known cure. The National MS Society is the driving force for this research and without their funding or support many recent advances in therapy and treatment could not have been made. By supporting the National MS Society we increase the likely hood that better treatments and a potential cure for an unpredictable disease of the brain and spinal cord can be found, hopefully within my lifetime.
